He received B.A. and master's degrees from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. He was Treasurer of the Nebraska Environmental Health Association, ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of the Omaha Restaurant Association, member of MCC's Advisory Committee and a Nebraska Pure Food Act-Nebraska Food Industry Review Board Member. He was named Administrator of the Year (1995) by the Nebraska Environmental Health Association. He coordinated adoption of the federal food code at the Douglas County Health Department.

He was President of the Omaha Restaurant Association Foundation, President of the Omaha Restaurant Association, President of the Nebraska Restaurant Association, board member of the National Restaurant Association (1981-1990) and board member of the National and Meat (1984). He was the Nebraska Resterauteur of the Year (1974) and Omaha Resterauteur of the Year (1988). He is he son of Fran and Esther, Founders of Johnny's Cafe.

He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He had professional food service training and was a member of the Nebraska Culinary Association, Nebraska Restaurant Association, Omaha Restaurant Association, North American Food Service Corporation and the advisory board for Rich's Food Products part of the Nestle Corporation. He was Vice President and General Manager of Ancona Bros. Co. and Pegler-Sysco. He served as Account Executive at John Sexton Co, Sales Representative for Continental Coffee and Chairman of the Admittance Board for the Omaha Hospitality Hall of Fame.

He attended Basic Food Service School, Montfordt Point, N.C.; the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, N.Y.; Johnson & Whales Culinary Institute, Providence, R.I.; and MCC. He was Executive Chef at the Happy Hollow Club and Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Tommy's, Tommy's at the Point and Tommy's Topside restaurants. He was Banquet Chef at the Omaha Country Club, Executive Chef/Co-Owner of Tommy Shaw's Homestead, Executive Chef of the Kiewit Plaza Club & Cloud Room and Co-Founder of the American Culinary Federation Omaha Chapter. He attended the Chef's Manager Symposium for Best Clubs of the Midwest and received an Award of Excellence from the American Culinary Federation Omaha Chapter, a Find Dining Award from Chaine des Rotisseurs St. Louis Chapter and a Fine Dining Award from Gommanderies St. Louis Chapter.
